Web Solutions Offered
MIMICS now offers a wide array of web programming services, including:
- Standard Web Products – these include MIMICS modules (such as Portfolio, Stockholder Accounting, etc.) that are fully web-based and do not have an internal Win32 component. These systems are fairly standard, but the look of the site can be customized for the client, along with forms, and the facility to turn on or off functionality. All employee users of MIMICS’ client access the system through a web browser.
- Web Interfaces – these are web portals that interface with MIMICS or other databases. These web portals are often installed in conjunction with a Win32 client/server MIMICS module or other third-party modules. These web portals can be in real-time (ie. Direct database access) or can have a lag (ie. Interfacing with a copy of the database(s) that is updated periodically). It can be read-only for the users to view/download information, or it can allow transactions to be posted through the website.
- Outsourcing – this is the programming of websites from scratch to client specifications, and utilizing the technologies requested by the client.
Website Security
MIMICS uses various techniques to secure the websites it creates.
MIMICS always recommends the acquisition of an SSL Certificate for the domain of the website. An SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificate will allow the User’s browser to validate the identity of the web site and then create an encrypted connection with the server. All information sent from the User’s browser to the web server will then be encrypted and secure.
All MIMICS websites are password protected. The strength of the passwords can be determined by the MIMICS client. However, MIMICS recommends at least 6 characters, with at least one capital letter, one number, and one special character. The web site will not allow access without a password.
MIMICS can also utilize alternative authentication information, such as additional usage of bio-metrics or scan-cards. This possibility can be discussed with MIMICS.
Optionally, the website can also be made available only through a VPN connection. This option would only be used in the case when you have a fixed, limited set of customers who will need to access the website. It is not feasible when you have a non-fixed set of customers. However, if you use a VPN connection, the website would only be available within your own internal network, and not available to the full Internet. The VPN connection would facilitate a secure tunnel to your network to access the website.
MIMICS websites can also be configured with Timeout features. This will log a User off the website if there has been a period of inactivity. This will help avoid the possibility of another person getting on the User’s computer after they have logged on to the site. The time before timing-out can be determined by the MIMICS client.
All MIMICS databases are fully encrypted. The only access to the data is through the website itself (or another MIMICS module). However, if the data were to be accessed by someone unauthorized, it would still be encrypted.
The data accessed by the website can also be placed on a different server than the one hosting the website itself. This further protects against the ability to access the data through any other method than the website.
The web server itself should be protected appropriately by the user of Routers, Hardware and Software Firewalls, and Anti-Virus software. This is usually handled by the IT department of the MIMICS Client.
